Steve Lane
Description
I have over 30 year's experience of insect field survey and identification. As a professional ecologist, I have carried out numerous invertebrate surveys and produced reports that interpret the ecological value of proposed developments, offering advice and recommendations for mitigation and habitat creation.
In 2015, I wrote an identification key to the British species in the genus of leaf beetles Longitarsus, for inclusion in Volume 4 of Beetles of Britain and Ireland (BBI) by Andrew Duff. Also between 2014 and 2017 I have produced two IUCN Reviews for Natural England and I am currently (2018) engaged on a third. These publications are an important assessment of the current status of British species, highlighting and summarising the distribution, ecological requirements, threats and management and conservation issues of those in particular that are threatened by extinction. I have written or co-authored over 70 natural history publications between 1986 and the present date. These have included species distribution atlases for the county of Warwickshire, notes in national entomological journals and magazines and scientific research papers in local journals and annual reports.
I developed skills in insect identification before and during my 15-year tenure as Keeper of Natural History at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, where I managed a collection of 200,000 Natural History specimens including a collection of over 120,000 British insects. The work included the re-organisation of collections, critical species identification, cataloguing, collections research, documenting and disseminating data. More recently, I was contracted to work on the Leicestershire Museums insect collections, work which included checking the identification of around 60,000 individual beetle specimens and producing three publications for National journals detailing my work.
I am currently (2018) engaged in a project in which I am identifying some 50,000 specimens (Coleoptera and Hemiptera) collected from pitfall trap samples in the Breckland area of Norfolk.
