Isle of Man historical wildlife records 1990 to 1994
Manx Biological Recording Partnership
Description
This dataset comprises historical wildlife records, from a wide variety of sources, recorded between 1990 and 1994. The records were collated separately by the three main partners: Manx National Heritage (MNH), Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) and Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, Isle of Man Government (DEFA). These databases were merged in 2012. There are a few duplicates.
Geographic Description
VC 71 Isle of Man and its territorial waters to 12 miles. May include marine records beyond the 12 miles. Many records have been recorded at six figure grid-reference resolution. Botanical records and non-avain vertebrates have a particularly good coverage across the island. Avian records are managed comprehensively by Manx Birdlife http://manxbirdlife.im although this dataset does contain some bird records.
Purpose
The purpose for the collection of the bulk of this data has been to gather information for the use of the three main partners (Manx Wildlife Trust, Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Governement) to carry out their functions in protecting the natural environment of the Isle of Man.
Data quality
Confidence in this data has to be described as relatively low because of the nature of the historical records. Nevertheless care has been taken to ensure accuracy wherever possible.
Most MBRP records have come from expert determiners and experienced naturalists but a systematic species verification process has only been carried out for some taxonomic groups. This work is ongoing. MBRP relies on both the honesty and accuracy of recorders, but cannot rule out instances of either deliberate or accidental misidentification.
Records which did not pass the validation checks in NBN Export Format Addin during export from Recorder6 have not been included.
All records in this dataset have passed the NBN Record Cleaner validation but 6% of records failed species verification.
Methods
Various methods of data capture, either depending on the survey methodology or the route from field recorder. Data is derived from a variety of sources, herbarium specimens, publications, recording cards/paper and individual reports. All our records are collated into a networked Recorder6 (dictionary version 3B) database.
