Vascular plant records verified via iRecord

Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland

Description

This dataset contains species records of vascular plants submitted by the general public via iRecord, and that have been verified by BSBI vice-county recorders or recorders approved by BSBI vice-county recorders. Records originate from individuals using iRecord or related apps. It includes records of both native and non-native species.

Geographic Description

UK

Purpose

The records contained in this dataset were generated for a wide range of purposes, mainly personal biological recording, but also for mapping the occurrence of species for BSBI distribution atlases (both local and national) and reporting the occurrence of invasive non-native species

Data quality

The iRecord system has NBN record cleaner rules incorporated within it based on BSBI distribution data. This allows records to be filtered based on whether they 'fit' known ranges. The route by which data arrives for verification in iRecord can vary, and comes from recorders with a wide range of ability, but the same verification process is applied to all data and the scheme believes that the dataset provided to NBN is of high quality.

Methods

This dataset includes direct observations of vascular plant species in wild locations by recorders and submitted via iRecord or related apps. Most of these observations are ad hoc records made by a wide range of organisations and individuals with a range of botanical expertise. All records are subjected to the same level of verification by regional plant experts, who check any unusual records (location, time of year, identity). Such records are only 'accepted' if backed by supporting evidence (i.e. photo, specimen, confirmation from additional recorders).
