Hippoboscidae and Nycteribiidae Recording Scheme - records verified via iRecord
Dipterists Forum
Description
This dataset covers the Diptera in the families Hippoboscidae (flat flies and keds) and Nycteribiidae (bat flies). All records have been verified by the scheme. Records are submitted directly to iRecord and or via the recorders. Dataset includes records collated from old museum records and published literature where records remain valid after changes in taxonomy or are reliably identifiable from the descriptions. It also includes data from the "2021 Mapping the UK's Flat Flies Project" and its 2020 pilot study.
Additional information can be obtained from the Hippoboscidae and Nycteribiidae Recording Scheme.

Purpose
Records are collated in order to increase knowledge of these under-recorded families, explore their distribution and phenology and to raise awareness of them amongst bird ringers, bat workers, dipterists and the wider community. Sharing the records with NBN Atlas will help conserve the records so that they are available for further research.
Data quality
All data is subject to the same verification checking, which aims to ensure that any record that is unusual (due to time of year, location, or species identified) is queried, and only accepted if supporting evidence (photo, specimen, confirmation from additional recorders) is provided. The scheme believes that a high degree of confidence can be placed in this data; however, the scheme cannot guarantee that all records which pass the verification checks are correct.
Methods
This dataset covers the Diptera in the families Hippoboscidae (flat flies and keds) and Nycteribiidae (bat flies). All records have been verified by the scheme. Records are submitted directly to iRecord and or via the recorders on an ad hoc basis. The dataset includes records which have been collated from old museum records and published literature where records remain valid after changes in taxonomy or are reliably identifiable from the descriptions. It also includes data from the "2021 Mapping the UK's Flat Flies Project" and its 2020 pilot study organised by Denise Wawman. This was a citizen science project involving British Trust for Ornithology licensed bird ringers and wild rehabilitators who were asked to collect flat flies from birds they handled.
