Stour and Orwell benthic survey
Harwich Haven Authority
Description
The wide scale monitoring programme of the benthic communities of the Stour and Orwell estuaries was introduced by Harwich Haven Authority (HHA) in 1997, as part of the compensation, mitigation, and monitoring agreement under their 1998-2000 Capital Dredge Licence. The monitoring programme, which was later amended to meet the requirements of the Trinity III Extension consent, had an original frequency of five years. Benthic monitoring has continued annually from 2007 until 2015.
Geographic Description
Stour and Orwell estuaries
Methods
Samples are collected from 44 stations, 16 in the Orwell and 28 in the Stour annually. Sampling is undertaken by Thomson and HHA employees from the 'Egret'. One sample is taken at each station using a 0.04 m2 Shipek grab. Biological analyses are conducted at Thomson's laboratory with internal quality control procedures. Biota are extracted and identified to the most accurate taxonomic level and counted. Non-countable taxa are recorded as present ('P').
