2022 onward Orkney North Isles Breeding Wader project - Habitat indicator species
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
Description
Annual vegetation surveys carried out on lowland wetland sites, where habitat enhancement works have taken places across the North Isles of Orkney. The presence of ten positive indicator plant species (or genus) are recorded during breeding wader surveys, as part of a completing a Wader Scorecard which was developed by RSPB in conjunction with NatureScot. As the survey route follows transects spaced 200m apart, it is possible that some species recorded as absent during the survey were present elsewhere on site and absence records have therefore been excluded. Species included in the dataset are: Bogbean, cuckooflower, lesser spearwort, lousewort spp., marsh cinquefoil, marsh marigold, marsh pennywort, meadowsweet, ragged robin & cotton grass spp.
Geographic Description
The dataset only includes records of 10 plant species/genus within the survey boundaries of 20 sites across the North Isles of Orkney.
Purpose
The dataset exits as part of an annual assessment of habitat quality for breeding waders.
Data quality
All monitoring was undertaken by the same experienced surveyor who carried out all the survey work across the two years.
Methods
No specific method was followed for recording the plant species, but the same survey route was followed each year, which involved visiting to within 100m of all areas of each site. This was part of carrying out an O'Brien & Smith breeding wader survey.
