Non-avian taxa (BTO+partners)
British Trust for Ornithology
Description
These records of non-bird species have been submitted by contributors to surveys run by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) over many years, often in collaboration with other partner organisations. The largest numbers of records relate to mammals from Garden Birdwatch and dragonflies from BirdTrack, with smaller numbers of records from a range of other surveys including the Non-Estuarine Waterbird Survey (NEWS). Records have been converted to standard biological records, but exclude the identity of the observers (for data protection reasons) and measures of abundance and other biological variables (for reasons of interpretation). Note that where duplicate observations exist for the same species and date, from the same or different sources, these have been deduplicated to produce a single record aggregated by species scientific name and event date. The highest identification verification status is provided where different values are present in the source data.

Data quality
Most of the records in this dataset were collected within the context of specific surveys, and verification has been carried out over many years in ways considered appropriate at the time for the needs of those surveys. Importantly, given that many BTO surveys aim to use large datasets to characterise broad trends in common species, in many cases the accuracy of every individual record may not have been considered in detail. However, in most cases, records can be assumed to be Accepted (Considered Correct) in the terminology being adopted across the biological recording sector. Please contact BTO if you have concerns about individual records.
