Conchological Society of Great Britain & Ireland: non-marine molluscs (rare and scarce species)

Conchological Society of Great Britain & Ireland

Description

The records in this dataset are the results of a compilation of records of rare and scarce species within Great Britain and Nothern Ireland. It was assembled and maintained by Michael Kerney on behalf of the Conchological Society and was subsequently digitised. The exact source of digitisation is unclear and the quality of the data are still being verified by the Society. All the survey data were collected by members of the Conchological Society. Recording is still continuing but records are added to a separate dataset.

Geographic Description

The dataset covers Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The sampling is biased towards England with a lower level of sampling in Scotland. Note that some effort was made ahead of the publication of the atlas to sample areas which had been under recorded.

Purpose

To gain baseline data about the distribution of non-marine molluscs in the UK and Ireland.

Data quality

Initial validation of the records was carried out by automatically checking that the grid reference occurred within the recorded Vice County stated. Work is currently underway to verifiy the quality of the data against the original source data.

Methods

The scheme relies heavily on adhoc records provided by Society members. However, prior to the publication of the atlas (1999) significant efforts were made to survey areas which had been undersampled. While efforts were made to try and include a range of habitats in these areas, the sampling was not as thorough and rarer species may well have been overlooked.
