DASSH Data Archive Centre volunteer sightings records

Marine Biological Association

Description

This dataset consists of casual observations reported by members of the public

Geographic Description

This data set aggregates records from the coast and seas around the UK and Ireland with some estuarine sightings.

Data quality

Data is collected by volunteers and members of the public. All records are validated and locations plotted. Some locations are estimated from descriptions and the granularity of the observation is variable. Rare species or species outside their range are verified by experts with photographs or specimens. Species within their range and expected habitat are assumed to be correct.

Methods

Casual observations and recreational activities e.g rockpooling on the shore, on the sea and underwater.
