UK Cranefly Recording Scheme - records verified via iRecord

UK Cranefly Recording Scheme

Description

This dataset contains records of the Tipuloidea (cranefly families Tipulidae, Limoniidae, Pediciidae and Cylindrotomidae). Added to this are the families Trichoceridae (winter gnats) and Ptychopteridae (fold-winged craneflies). Records submitted are two-fold; data received via the UK Cranefly Recording Scheme and added to iRecord by Pete Boardman, and data added by other recorders directly.

Geographic Description

UK

Purpose

Records collected here are used as the basis of UK Cranefly Recording Scheme dataset, which is used to map distribution, and founds the basis of species status reviews. Records are collated in order to add to knowledge of this group of insects, including distribution, population trends, autecology and phenology.

Data quality

All records are checked, and the scheme believes that a high degree of confidence can be placed in this data; however, the scheme cannot guarantee that all records which pass the verification checks are correct.

Methods

Records collated within the dataset come via a variety of sources including structured and unstructed fieldwork, records at moth traps, sweep-netting, pitfall traps, Malaise traps, or casually encountered records. Many records are accompanied by photographs.
